Dr. Andy’s Desk: What is LactoSpore and How Does it Work?

Learn More About This Strain of Good Bacteria and Why We Chose it for Our Kids’ Probiotic

“LactoSpore.” It sort of sounds like the next intergalactic superhero, doesn’t it? While you won’t find LactoSpore® battling a villainous alien, this strain of good bacteria, or probiotics, does quite heroic work when it comes to supporting your health!

What Is LactoSpore®?

If you missed it, we recently announced the availability of our Tummy blend – a probiotic for little bellies! Each Good Day Chocolate Tummy contains 1 billion CFUs (colony-forming units) of LactoSpore®.

Probiotics – often referred to as “good bacteria” – are microorganisms, or microflora. When taken in adequate amounts, they have a beneficial effect on the body.

Various strains of good bacteria are used as probiotics, and some of the most common are:

  • lactobacillus
  • bifidobacterium
  • yeast saccharomyces boulardii.

Why did Good Day Chocolate choose LactoSpore® (or Bacillus coagulans) for our formula?

For one, it is a well-studied, clinically-validated, shelf-stable probiotic that has been proven to support digestive health and mitigate digestive distress.

Also, it is well-tolerated and a safe ingredient, which – especially when we’re creating a product to help improve kids’ health – is of utmost importance.

How Does Lactospore Work?

What also makes LactoSpore® unique is that it forms spores during its reproductive life cycle. What that means is that it can go dormant during the “ride” to the gut, where it can do its work to help protect the body and restore the gut’s protective barrier – whereas other probiotics might not survive the journey through the stomach acid. Pretty heroic if you ask me!

Once it has settled in the digestive tract and produces enough lactic acid and other antagonistic substances, it can then inhibit the growth of “bad” bacteria, while stimulating the growth of other healthy bacteria.

Who Should Take Probiotics?

Nearly everyone can benefit from a probiotic, even children!

When we are born, we typically have a harmonious balance of bacteria (some “good,” some “bad”) in our digestive system. Over time, factors like diet, stress, medications, and exercise may tip that balance of bacteria and create undesired symptoms.

When the intestinal microflora is restored to a more balanced state, it translates to better immunity, better absorption of essential nutrients, and even better mental health. Read more about how probiotics work and about the gut-brain interaction in our recent blog post.

Kids ages four and older can enjoy one Good Day Chocolate Tummy daily to keep their bellies – and bodies and brains – happy.

As always, consult with your physician prior to taking any supplement.
